The Acton~Shapleigh Historical Society was established in 1964 to collect, catalog, and preserve local materials and objects, as well as the genealogy of our local families, which may help to verify and preserve the history of the towns of Acton & Shapleigh and surrounding areas.
ASHS is located on Route 109 in Shapleigh and housed in the former Mousam Lake School House. (1923-1949)
Currently on display through October at the Historical Society building are many items related to school life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the generous gifts of many supporters of ASHS, artifacts include an 1880 parlor organ, an ice chest, and a cobbler's bench. Also on display are farm tools, maps, school house furniture, flags, and military memorabilia.
The Society's Library includes genealogy of several prominent towns folk and founding fathers of Acton and Shapleigh. Town reports, voting registries, cemetery records, town deeds, school year books, and many other historical resources are available to help with your research.
